Classroom Management Tips

back to Orientation

  with an
opening routine or activity for students
to do immediately upon entering your room.

  • get laptop ready to use
  • look up the meaning of the word
    of the day
  • do a puzzle
  • check assignments on email
  • turn in HW
  • post a comment to a wiki
  • write a 1-2 word review of the
previous day's lesson on the board
  • write any questions they have
    on the board

ARRANGE furniture to facilitate
  • viewing by you of laptop screens
  • viewing by students of marker board
  • viewing by students of each other
  • viewing by students of you
thus promoting awareness, focus,
collaboration and openness. Visualize
some classroom arrangements here .

TAKE NOTE
  of available
time by writing the ending
time on the board to promote

  • sufficient time to bring class to a close
  • and facilitate students
    packing up without being
    rushed or forgetful.
Have a student do a VERBAL WIKI
- a really quick summary of the most
important concept/topic/idea covered
during the period.

When you want your students'
FULL ATTENTION
try

  • screens down
  • books closed
  • pens plopped or
  • change of location incorporating
    movement
to help them focus.

MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES going
on at once facilitates

  • continuous engagement by students
  • individual and group projects
  • incorporation of technology
  • teacher walkabout to provide
    assistance and feedback

and promotes collaboration and your
being a guide on the side rather than
a sage on the stage

STUDENTS teaching
students and giving class
demonstrations lets

  • students be in the driver's seat and
  • provides a forum to demonstrate
    student understanding.
