How To Manage Your Time

So you want to have plenty of time for surfing before and after school, or kiting or whatever it is you like to do. But the problem is that you forgot that you had this big assignment due at the end of the week and now you have to spend the next four days doing only that. Bummer! Last week the surf was non-existent and there was no wind at all. This week it's honkin'. Oh well, just go to one of those cubicles in the library and try not to look out the window.

So how can you prevent this from happening again? You got it. Time Management skills.

  1. Keep a planner that includes your daily and weekly assignments as well as your after school life and your social life.

  2. Review the planner regularly to see where you might run into some time issues. Click here for a sample of good planning. You want to think about how much time you will need for any given day. Then look at what can be moved around. Assignments are the easiest thing to move because they can be broken up. So if you need to read four chapters by Friday, you might or might not want to read a chapter per night.

  3. Figure out how long it really takes to do stuff like your math homework. Time yourself over the course of a week. Click here for a homework time sheet. Don't forget to count homework breaks. I know a lot of kids who say it only takes 30 minutes for them to do homework in math but then they end up being up all night doing it. The reason is they thought it would only take 30 minutes so they put it off till last and did other stuff beforehand.
