Teaching Tips

MODEL what you want your students to do. 
  • respect for others by listening when someone speaks and referring to them with positive vocabulary
  • computer usage by using your laptop during clas to present a portion of a lesson
  • timeliness by posting HW on eamil on a regular schedule and returning assignments within the week
  • humility and risk taking by not always knowing the answer, acknowledging it's okay, and then taking steps to find out
  
PROMOTE discussion, communication and attention.
  • make notes availabe online as emails or web pages or in a wiki (especially helpful for absent students, slow note takers, and those who process information better when not taking notes)
  • use various formats such as email chats, round table chats, debates...

  • collaborative projects such as wikis
  • promote writer for a wider audience (wikis, blogs...)
  
FOSTER internalization of ideas, and visualization and manipulation of those ideas.
  • use the laptop to animate ideas (Flash, SketchUp, Geometer's Sketchpad, Inspiration...)

  • debates
  • compare and contrast
  
EMPOWER students to demonstrate understanding.
  • create learning tools for each other (animations, wiki page, slide shows...)
  • teach a concept or topic to the rest of the class
  • use jigsaw groups
  
 Provide timely FEEDBACK.
  • roam the classroom and make comments to students

  • place comments on wikis
  • online practice with programs wuch as Conjugamos for languages...
  
Provide VARIETY in how students can access content.
  • alter room layout
  • provide multiple materials

  • emphasize risk taking and the importance of making mistakes
